The most corrosive part of car-dependent land use is that it puts everyone living in it in a zero-sum fight. They think as drivers: an additional resident automatically means more traffic, more congestion, less parking. It *inherently* makes people hostile to new housing/people.
Just think about that: you're building in hostility to growth, right at the front end. You're ensuring that every single building project is a fight, that every single newcomer is viewed as a competitor/nuisance. You're building in local xenophobia *by design*.
Whereas, if you live in a place that's pleasant without a car, where most other people don't own a car, then new residents are naturally a *good* thing. More tax revenue, more friends, more kids for the schools, more shoppers for the stores, more eyes on the street. More LIFE.
