From 1870-1900, Mississippi and South Carolina were majority black and many other states (Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Louisiana) were near-majority.

A lot of such coalitions got off the ground (like the Readjusters in Virginia and the Fusionists in North Carolina) but they tended to be destroyed by white mob violence
In any case, the right way to needle Dems about the limits of majoritarianism is to ask about Roe v. Wade and/or Miranda, this stuff is just nonsense that is embarrassing to see 66 years after The Strange Career of Jim Crow
