I still haven’t seen Promising Young Woman and I probably won’t, but the spoilers (? I guess) because I read about the ending below
maybe there is some nuance that has been missed in the summaries and reviews I read, but as a future defense attorney my perspective is that the guy who murders her has an amazing self-defense case!
not even in a “justice favors white men” way. but in a reasonable person standard fear of imminent harm way. the promise of carceral justice at the end of the movie is based on a total misapprehension of how that case would play out.
and you can have issues with that reality, but to me that logical next step is to question why we keep relying on that system for justice or restitution, not this movie’s relationship with the criminal punishment system.
