I've been on a Mortal Kombat kick as of late, thanks partially to the hype around the new #MortalKombatMovie . I'm so excited for this film to release later this month. Judging from the trailers it looks like it has the potential to be an actually good video game movie.
I've been watching this on #HBOMax. #MortalKombatLegendsScorpionsRevenge is a 2020 animated film from WB Animation (who've been responsible for the DCAMU films like Justice League Dark: Apokolyps War). This is one interesting film.
MKL:SR seeks to tell two stories:
1. The story of MK1, the MK tournament on Shang Tsung's island and
2. The tale of Scorpion seeking revenge for murder of his clan, wife, and son.
It mostly succeeds here with telling the story it wanted to tell, however...
It tells yells the story unevenly. The film struggles for a central character switching between Scorpion and the Earthrealm Warriors. However it makes up for this with some fairly well executed, yet gruesome, animation. Taking inspiration from the modern MK games, it features
some striking x-ray shots that combine with excellent sound effects to really depict the violence of the fighting in this film.
I was initially disappointed in the voice cast being different from that of the games, but I feel that the actors did their characters justice. A stand out is Joel McHale as Johnny Cage. This casting honestly feels perfect.
Honestly, if you're an MK fan you should check this film out, although none fans may not get much out of it besides some good action. It's available for streaming on #HBOMax, but it also got a digital & physical release. I think I'll revisit this thread later and talk on MK11.
