So, @HennepinAtty Mike Freeman is handing off the case to another County Attorney. That might feel like good news, but it's actually bullshit. Here's why: https://twitter.com/HennepinAtty/status/1381682160654938113
County attorneys are elected officials. The major argument for electing county attorneys is so that they are periodically accountable to voters. If we don't like their decisions, we can vote them out. (Or, you know we can @recallfreeman.)
By pushing this case to another county, Mike Freeman gets to avoid responsibility for making the decision, which is cowardly but also on-brand. What's even worse though: The person making the charging decision is in NO WAY ACCOUNTABLE to the residents of Hennepin County.
So, we went from a bad option (i.e., depending on Mike Freeman to hold a cop accountable), to an even worse option (i.e., giving this decision to someone who Hennepin County voters never elected and have no way of holding accountable should he let the cop off.
The only person this is good for is Mike Freeman. This isn't about the community. It's not about accountability. It's the opposite of that.
