As someone who grew up in the NW suburbs of MPLS, here's a recount of my interaction with the police as a white male-passing person 🧵
1. when I was 16, I was driving my red Monte Carlo 60 miles per hour in a 30mph zone. I got pulled over (obviously) and was really worried about getting a ticket or suspension. When asked for my license, I set my Eagle Scout ID on my leg; the cop noticed.
1 (cont). He was an Eagle Scout too, notice the ID, we chatted about it and he let me go with a warning. Going 30 mph over in a residential street.
2. In highschool, there were many many parties where a mess of (predominately) white kids, myself included, would be drinking, making noise violations, etc. A few times the cops were called on us; aside from one incident, no one was charged and we were all given warnings.
3. When I was 17, I was sitting in a friends car at 2am outside my mother's house blasting 'Sunbather' by Deafheaven which had just come out. A cop was driving down the street and decided we looked suspicious; he flipped on his lights, came up to the door of the truck.
3 (cont). He asked to see my ID, and since it had the address of the house we were sitting in front of, he left.
I've had many other encounters with police in the NW suburbs and the common thread I see are those warnings. In every one of those situations, never once did I fear for my life. This is the physical manifestation of privilege in the NW suburbs & the US in general.
People of color don't get let off with warnings from police. They get antagonized, harassed, imprisoned, and murdered. If a POC found themselves in any of the situations I described in this thread, the outcomes would look vastly different. #JusticeForDuanteWright #blm
If you're white and grew up in the NW suburbs, please reply to this thread with your experiences. The contrast of our experiences compared to our Black & Brown neighbors should be exposed. @_swintle @bennukisuit @r_schuerman @colinhortman @cblakebakes
