After stating yesterday, schools would definitely return, ON govt now says they will be virtual indefinitely. It's just unconscionable. All of it. The chaos, the impact on children and their right to education, on parents, on mental health, the flippancy with which it's announced
We are 13 months into this thing, with potentially a 4th wave to come. There is no plan ("the vaccine fairy" is not a plan). There are confused children denied a right to education, and parents way beyond their capacities. Miserable doesn't even begin to capture it
And the last 10 moths have been entirely shaped by policy and government choices. The chaos, the confusion, the denial of education, the stress and misery, the skyrocketing transmission disproportionately affecting certain people - all of them choices
"Home schooling" (aka trying to do an actual job as a single parent while playing IT support, listening to lessons, chasing up homework, and doing 40 mins admin each night) does not work. It leads to burnout, misery and tears, and very little learning anyway
This isn’t accidental. The ON govt saw this coming because we all did. ‘Hobble along with open-close waves til the vaccine fairy arrives because we don’t want any new spending or programs’ IS the plan
Once the ON govt sent kids back to school in Sept with no real new measures or funding, without major backlash, they knew they could. If the approach worked for kids’ safety, then it’d work everywhere. No new spending or programs that risk becoming permanent
