./ I see my my good friend Margaret Lynch is being accused of all sorts. She& #39;s even been labelled -by the usual keyboard warriors- of homophobia. Get real. Here& #39;s a little story about Ma-Grit, as I like to call her, that shows why that& #39;s so ridiculous.

./ Many moons ago I was President of the Glasgow University Gay Society (there were only 10 members so god knows why we needed a President). I was 19. To advance the cause we decided we& #39;d hold a meeting in the University Union which was so reactionary @LiamFox was on the Board!
./ I marched into their reception, asked to book a room, and all hell broke loose. No way would we be allowed to hold a meeting, I was told. The Board publicly issued a statement saying we& #39;d be a moral danger to students. This was a Union that regularly showed porn films!
./ We launched a campaign, the NUS broke off links and pickets were held. Margaret was by my side as buckets of beer mixed with piss were thrown over us and we were spat on. John Nicolson, an influential member of the GUU debating elite, was no where to be seen. Strangely.
./ He wasn& #39;t interested in gay rights when there were no career points to be scored. We were getting nowhere so I decided to stand for President of the GUU itself. Mags gave out leaflets, helped paste up fliers and was one of a handful of lefties who came to the Big Debate.
./ The Debating Chamber was full of 400 baying assholes throwing things, jeering etc. But when I was attacked on stage it was Margaret Lynch who rushed to the front and was clambering to get onto it to defend me when Board Members grabbed the assailants and dragged them off.
./ The Board realised it would be a public relations disaster if I got beaten up. As it was the attack shocked the audience and helped swing the debate in my favour. I ended up coming within a hair& #39;s breadth of winning the election. The GUU was never quite the same after that.
