1) Something that's really frustrating with shows/movies that are "Black trauma/pain centered" is it seems like they don't realize that you only need one piece of trauma to create character to drive plot.
2) In Get Out, it's ONE THING. Chris's mother dies in a car crash, causing him to become frozen and overcoming that when dealing with the Armitage family.

In Watchmen, it's the Black Wall Street massacre.

In Beloved, it's Sethe's loss.
3) The thing that makes shows/films hard to watch is the creation of constant and escalating trauma to create story.

It's not just one death, it's constant death. It's not just guilt, it's witnessing the brutal, graphic repetition of torture and thinking THAT'S character/story.
4) In reading that review of Th*m, it's clear that losing a child or being assaulted IS ENOUGH to make a whole narrative about.

You don't also have to make that family, those characters go through more torture, more violence.
5) That's what the issue is. Thinking that more is more without realizing what seeing more torture and more violence does to your audience. What that says to people who have gone through trauma.

"Your trauma isn't interesting but more of it would definitely be!"
6) It's the difference between saying "We want to show how this character moves through trauma" vs. "we want to show how trauma moves through these characters."

One is compelling storytelling. One is a brutal battery of assaults.
7) In conclusion, I have no bandwidth after the last two years of my life to watch trauma for trauma's sake. Thank you and good day!
