ramadan mubarak!! since many dont know the context of this month, i thought id make a quick thread explaining its history and practices :)
today marks the first day of the month of ramadan. muslims observe this month by fasting (having neither water nor food) from sunrise to sunset. the meal before dawn is known as suhur and the meal at dusk is known as iftar.
the goal of this month is to encourage discipline, patience, charity, and empathy for the less privileged. it is tradition for those who are privileged to prioritize charity and community. there’s dinner parties, lots of charity, volunteering, and prayer/ solidarity.
not everyone has to fast!! it’s meant for able-bodied adults. for example, due to health reasons, im only going to be able to keep a few fasts this year. ramadan is about more than just fasting :)
after the month of ramadan comes eid al fitr!! its basically our christmas. we pray, give gifts, go to parties, and spend time with loved ones. it’s a time of community, prayer, and charity.
this month commemorates “the night of power” when the quran was revealed to Prophet Mohammed (pbh).
to be respectful to your muslim brothers and sisters, be more careful when eating/ drinking in public!! seeing/ smelling food when youre hungry and cant eat is the worst feeling. if youre planning on (safely and vaccinated) having a meal with a muslim, make sure its after dark.
most importantly... spread love, community, solidarity, and charity. thats what this month is all about
