As I have argued elsewhere ( https://www.crimeandjustice.org.uk/sites/crimeandjustice.org.uk/files/PSJ%20225%20May%202016.pdf) #education has often been co-opted as something ârehabilitativeâ by disciplinary authorities. However, this fundamentally mistakes both the nature of #rehabilitation in #prison and education. 2/?
Firstly, when it comes to the concept/practice of #Rehabilitation in prison. There are fundamentally two issues:
1. Rehabilitation is rhetorically predicated on the notion of correcting some criminogenic flaw in the individual.

2. #Rehabilitation in #prison, in practice, often has 0 to do with changing the individual for some post-release good, it is about coercing compliance within the walls through a façade of disciplinary change.
Both of these issues are fundamentally problematic! 4/?

#Education, whilst providing a person limited opportunity to overcome the structural inequalities that going to #prison inflicts upon them, its not correcting some fundamental criminogenic flaw
Arguing that it does, and is thus ârehabilitativeâ, is to make a category error. 5/?

It is this category error that lies behind much of the mischaracterising, and thus false narratives on, #LearningTogether.
As the article on LT in the below issue highlights, LT is concerned with curating learning environments, not changing people. 6/?

This reality is why #LearningTogether has always sat outside/been distinct from, the offender management/OBPs that infest our prisons.
OMs played no part in who attended our classes (certainly not those I have been involved with)
LT is not part of the treatment industry. 7/?

I donât really expect people who are ignorant of LT, or who have an agenda to push, to take on board what is being said here. Nevertheless, I do think it is important to have these issues on the record given the nonsense that is going to be spouted over the next weeks/months. 8/8
