For a team in defence, protecting important zones especially zone 14 is the key. It is the most important zone in Football. An attacker can use it to it's advantage if the defence line hasn't protected it.

Madrid prioritized that defending the zones are important. To seal zones 13,14,15–they made a square type shape and shuffled around the zones laterally as per the ball location. Here, Pedri was finding it hard to deliver a pass to his teammates.

Barcelona's key player Lionel Messi was the common victim of the trap. As soon as he entered these zones, he was swarmed by Madrid defenders and forced him to lose possession.

This idea is trivial but very useful. Zidane got it correct by instructing properly and inhibiting patience, discipline and correct timing to execute. These movements are to be completed in milliseconds as the opposition can hurt you if the timing is not correct.
