You’re totally right, @benbigdelle.

Starting from zero & trying to #buildinpublic when it feels like no one is listening feels like...absolute shit.

You might think I’m way ahead of you. I’m not.

This thread is for you and others like you 🙏
A/ Intro

I was in ur shoes not long ago. 6 months ago I had 47 followers. That’s basically where ur now.

That should give u some hope!

But there’s no magic sauce, man. Straight up. If u put in the work, you’ll see the results.

Before i give u some tips, a bit of honesty 👇
B/ Context

I’m actually not that far ahead of u. When I see peeps like @heybereket @KennethCassel & @AprilynneA, I feel like I’m barely moving.

Just last week, I posted a dud thread. It made me question whether I’ve made any progress at all. Not to mention the ~0$ made so far.
C/ Context

But on the other hand, when I look at all the people who I’ve connected with and who support me here, the projects and collabs that I’m now working on, etc. It feels like I’m doing *something* right.

So thanks for reaching out bc it reminded me of how far I’ve come.
D/ Fishing 🎣

So here are some things that helped me get started.

Take these with a grain of salt, knowing they come from someone who’s still figuring his own shit out as well haha.

Not tryna teach u how to fish here. Teaching you how to *learn* how to fish.
1/ Know why you’re doing it

Doing it bc everyone else is doing it is a bad reason. What’s your actual goal?

Another bad reason: "I want more followers"

Here’s my latest BIP manifesto for ref. It’s a 1st draft 🤷‍♂️

There's def others you'll find that are better. So look around!
2/ Study the game

All the best athletes, they study their game & their competition religiously.

There’s no competition here, but the concept holds.

There are pros (not me haha), and they should be studied.
2.1/ Who to study?

@thisiskp_
@PaulYacoubian
@Natalie_Furn
@yongfook
@vensykrishna
@MeetKevon
@arvidkahl
@JanelSGM

Plenty more ofc. My friends, pls fill in the gaps! 🙏

Pro tip: turn on notifs for 1-2 peeps/wk to activate stalker mode. Watch & learn from their behaviors.
3/ Give and you shall receive

Honestly, people will know if ur just in it for urself.

They read ur stuff bc they're learning something or they relate to it.

But u need to be willing to open yourself up & engage with others & connect with them.

Lots of good can come of this.
4/ Don’t focus on numbers

But, but, I want more followers!

Lol I know. I often think that too.

But that will come if you are transparent, provide value, and engage with people & are an active member of the community.

The number itself isn’t the goal.
5/ Show up every day

Simple, but essential. Some peeps will say no need to tweet every day.

I say u need to build the habit 1st. U can back off later, but 1st get used to tweeting regardless of the results.

Try new things. Experiment. Literally nothing to lose.
6/ Find buddies!

My first person was @kmendes. I didn’t know he was some big shot at @coda_hq lol. We were just a couple guys tryna figure this whole Twitter thing out together.

I then found @richardjlo on here as well.

Doing it alone is hard. So don’t do that 😂
7/ Some helpful resources

Other people have gone to great depths to study this stuff and put it in much better words than I could have. So here, study up.

Lots of other stuff floating around, but here's 8 relevant threads that I have saved in my bookmarks.
7.1/ Kevon BIP guide

Not a thread. But great starting point. @MeetKevon spent like 2 months researching and writing this definite guide, it is amazing.

https://kevoncheung.com/building-in-public

(he also has a free Making Twitter Friends email course btw)
7.2/ David's BIP Tweet Thread

No explanation needed. https://twitter.com/panphora/status/1377976423269433346?s=21
7.3/ Julie's thread about networking

Not literally about BIP, but for me, this stuff is super relevant. Building relationships, that's basically what I try to do here on Twitter. https://twitter.com/joulee/status/1365331373314043905?s=21
7.4/ KP, a BIP OG

A short thread with his 10 key lessons. https://twitter.com/thisiskp_/status/1369987723373731842?s=21
7.5/ Mustafa's Tips on Friend-making

Again, not specifically about BIP, but tons of overlap here.

"Even if you don't know anyone". This is probably how you feel right now. We've all been there. https://twitter.com/mkhundmiri/status/1351958590353940480?s=21
7.6/ Pohjie's deep dive on @JanelSGM's BIP journey

We all can thank Pohjie for this awesome piece of work. 👏 It ties together a number of key moments & threads from one of my first BIP inspirations.

Wanna learn by example? Here it is. https://twitter.com/pohjie_pj/status/1348509403540987904?s=21
7.7/ Gagan's Big 7

You prefer to learn from someone who's "made it big"? The dude's got like 75k followers now.

Here are his 7 quick lessons, very insightful. https://twitter.com/gaganbiyani/status/1344420584973864961?s=21
7.8/ JR's @FlurlyApp story

An amazing build in public example!

U can learn so many things here:
• how he structures the thread
• what he talks about
• actual tweet format
• his takeaways https://twitter.com/TheBuilderJR/status/1378382979148312580?s=20
8/ Tweeting "technique"?

I have a bunch of jems saved about this. Comment if you want me to share these!

They are more focused on stuff like "how to write viral tweet threads" or "how to improve your tweeting style"

Cool stuff, but for me better to focus on content/value 1st
9/ In summary

So yes, yes u do have to keep tweeting even when it feels like no one is looking at them.

But...it means:
1. you probably haven't done it for long enough, and/or
2. what ur tweeting isn't bringing value to peeps

Stick with it, and you'll see the results!
If you enjoyed this thread, please like and RT the first tweet so more people can see it!

I know this was a long one so I hope some of you read to here haha.
