Negotiate With Your Boss Like A Boss

How To Get A 20% Raise In 5 Simple Steps

/THREAD/
1. Ask And You Shall Receive

95% of people don't even ask for a raise

They just expect their boss will recognize their hard work

The 5% that get the raises are the ones who demand one
2. Lay The Groundwork

9 out of 10 people who ask for a raise do the following:

• Ask their boss for a meeting
• Try to "negotiate" a raise

This strategy has a low possibility of success

Here's what you should do instead

Be the 1 out of 10 who does the following:
• 6 months before asking for a raise ask your boss what it would take to be considered a top performer in your team/company

• Develop with him a detailed plan of goals to be achieved
• Find problems inside your team/company where you can offer solutions

• Determine how your current skills can be used inside the company and in other groups
3. Don't Focus Only On Salary

There are many ways you can get a raise apart from a salary increase

• Remote work: You spend less on commuting, eating out, and save time

• Education: Ask them to pay for online courses so you can acquire high-paying, in-demand skills for free.
• Business travel: Have your company send you on trips with clients or conferences

That way you:

• Save time
• Acquire skills
• Expand your network

All on your company's dime
4. Have A Backup Offer

You always need to show that you:
• Have other options
• You are an employee in-demand
• You could find a higher salary elsewhere

But how do you get a job offer from another company?
The answer is simple: Network

For my case, LinkedIn has been the tool I have utilized for this

Target three types of people there via DMs:

1. Employees with 2-3 more years of experience than you
2. HR reps from companies in your field
3. Recruiters
Things you should NEVER say:

• "I'm looking for a job"
• "Do you know if there is a job opening?"
• "I want to change jobs because they don't pay me enough"
Things you should say:
• "I'm looking for new challenges"
• "I have XYZ skills, could I solve any problems in your team/company?"
• "I have XYZ skills, what else would I need to take it to the next level?"
Recruiters are especially integral to get job offers

They can help you
• Get in touch with companies
• Give you feedback with job interviews
• Give you information about salaries on the market
Always stay in touch with them, even if the first offers are not what you want

Once you get another job offer, use it as another weapon to get a raise

And now it's time for the last step
5. Make Your Case

Things you shouldn't say:

• "My rent went up"
• "I have a baby on the way"
• "I worked really hard this year with lots of overtime"
• "Josh gets paid more than me and works the same years in the company"
Things you should say:

• "The current market offers X for my skills and value"
• "I helped this team/this client achieve ABC"
• "I was a top performer last year"
• "I exceeded all of my goals"
• "I solved XYZ problems"
To summarize

1. Ask And You Shall Receive
2. Lay The Groundwork
3. Don't Focus Only On Salary
4. Have A Backup Offer
5. Make Your Case

Follow these steps and ask for a raise like a boss

If your boss won't give it to you, someone else definitely will
