1/4 I wish we’d stop acting like info literacy replaces actual literacy & disciplinary knowledge. Ok, you can tell a source is authoritative, can you understand the jargon & contextualize it w/in broader dialog? If there’s a debate among specialists, can you assess the validity
2/4 of arguments? We haven’t even touched on paywalled content & poor primary education. How many conspiracy theorists have said “do your research” un-ironically? I’ve refrained myself multiple times from telling someone they don’t have the literacies needed for a conversation
3/4 because they don’t have enough grounding to understand what I mean by that statement. If you have no medical knowledge, can you decide whether an article, written by a cardiologist & arguing w/a neurologist on a topic you think is neurology related, is valid? If you have no
4/4 research experience, do you even know that’s something to ask? The answer for a lot of ppl is “no.” Also, “Google is free”...yes, but it also allows for paid optimization. So is it reliable? Info lit can’t fix a system that runs on profit & where misinformation is profitable.
