obviously a tragic event such as the murder of #DaunteWright should make you react, make you angry, make you want to act, but remember racism doesn& #39;t only manifest itself through those tragedies. you have to understand how deeply it is rooted within society as a whole +
Black lives matter is not a trend. Black lives should matter every minute of the day. racism happens everyday and not just when a Black person is killed. you should educate yourself about racism everyday and actively work on yourself if you& #39;re non-Black because you may +
have internalized racism even if you& #39;re not aware of it. admit to your wrong-doings and do better next time. educate those around you, have those "uncomfortable" discussions. how many Black people have to be killed for you to want to create change? +
speak up, raise Black people& #39;s voices, make change happen on your own scale. you can feel powerless sometimes because you& #39;re just one person but one person and another one and another one is an army of people. change starts individually +
and here& #39;s how you can start: you can interact with more Black people on social media, support more Black creators and influencers, buy from Black small businesses and if you can& #39;t afford it financially, then share their work, talk about it +
if one of your friends, even without doing it on purpose says or does something racist, tell them and explain to them why it& #39;s wrong, educate them. a lot of people aren& #39;t "racist" on purpose but very uneducated and that& #39;s a big issue +
do not speak over a Black person if you& #39;re not Black. if a Black person tells you something is racist, it is. end of discussion. however, you shouldn& #39;t wait on Black people to create change, especially if you& #39;re white. racism is a white people issue +
as a white person, your voice will be heard, people will listen to you, use it to raise Black people& #39;s voices. acknowledge your white privilege and use it to speak up against injustice. it is not enough to not be racist. you have to actively be ANTI-racist +
ask yourself "what can i do to help, how can i help?" again, it starts small, you may not be able to donate thousands to the cause, you may not have millions of followers or a huge platform to speak up but there& #39;s so much you can do. don& #39;t feel like you& #39;re not doing enough if +
you can& #39;t really do more. even if you think it& #39;s not much, your input is very much needed and appreciated, it& #39;s just as valid as someone donating a lot because they CAN. the worst is when you can do something but you don& #39;t +
i don& #39;t want to make this thread too long and maybe i was clumsy in my way of wording it. the fact remains racism is an on-going issue that needs on-going activism to dismantle it and it starts by understanding what it is exactly, where it comes from, and how it is reinforced +
i gave some examples on how you can help starting small but obviously there& #39;s an infinity of other ways to help. do what you can and talk about it. again, i will never say this enough but educating yourself is the first step. thank you for reading
