Racism + terrible Supreme Court precedent contributed to the killing of Daunte Wright, who should be alive today. SCOTUS authorized pretextual stops in 1996 in the Whren decision, which allow the police to stop a driver for any little reason, like a dangling air freshener 1/4
These stops are allowed even if the police’s underlying intent for the stop has no legal basis. Black men and women are pulled over everyday because of this terrible decision, for what is essentially racial profiling by the police. 2/4
Combined with the Terry decision, which permits police to stop-and-frisk people even when there’s no probable cause of a crime, you get a sense of what it means to live under an occupation force, when you can’t drive or walk without being pulled over or stopped-and-frisked. 3/4
Daunte Wright should be alive today. 4/4
