Bit of context on the Liam Cooper red card because it shows just how good City are are creating dangerous situations [thread]:
Things begin from a throw in:
As you can see, Gabriel Jesus has the ball and is about to give it to Mendy. Sterling has dropped deep off the Leeds defensive line. Because Jesus is closer to the byline, Ayling takes Jesus and Llorente takes Sterling.
Sterling drops deeper for the throw in pulling Llorente out and creating space in behind for Jesus to run into:
The ball goes out for another throw in and the same thing happens again:
Jesus is now isolated with Ayling in acres of space with only the libero, Liam Cooper, there to clean things up:
When Jesus turns Ayling, Cooper has to jump into a challenge to prevent a 1-on-1. Given the way the ball falls - perhaps Cooper is poorly positioned? - the challenge ends up being dangerous.
Also: the fact that Jesus and Sterling switch their markers probably plays into this too. If Ayling had been dropping with Sterling and Llorente marking Jesus, could have been a different story?
