🛌 Effects of Sleep Deprivation 🛌

As techies, sometimes due to a lot of work, we find ourselves sleep deprived just to catch up with work.

That comes with a huge negative impact in the long run on our health, if done continuously.

A thread 🧵👇🏽#DEVCommunity
1️⃣ Weight Gain

Lack of sleep can cause obesity.

Studies have shown that people who are sleep deprived have a higher body mass index (BMI).

This is because, lack of sleep causes hormonal imbalance that spikes appetite levels while reducing the sensation of fullness.
2️⃣ Diabetes

Lack of sleep can cause type 2 diabetes. This is because the body’s insulin sensitivity is reduced & also its ability to regulate blood sugar levels drops.

When a health sleep cycle is disrupted, this is clearly the case as mentioned above, various studies show.
3️⃣ Cardiovascular Disease

Lack of sleep increases the cortisol level (stress hormone) in the blood & also risk of HBP.

So, there is a link between sleep deprivation & heart disease.
Lack of sleep by individuals causes a higher levels of cytokines in their blood (proteins that regulate the body’s inflammatory response).

This can trigger inflammation, damaging healthy tissue & contributing to heart disease.
4️⃣ Cancer

Melatonin is a hormone produced during sleep. One of its roles is to clean out free radicals which is associated with developing cancer.

Lack of sleep reduces melatonin production which great affects the body’s ability to fight cancer.
5️⃣ Accidents

In addition to normal accidents that is caused when the body lacks sleep, here I’ll talk about accidents in code.

Lack of sleep clouds thinking & for developers, this will mean writing buggy code which is disastrous to the software.
It’s important for developers to get enough sleep to get the body well rested before working on software. 😂
