The risk posed by an eruption is related to 3 key factors- the type of hazards it creates, the people/infrastructure exposed to the hazards, and the vulnerability of those exposed. Vulnerability is complex, and entwined with many social and economic factors.
I have seen a couple of posts comparing #icelanderuption with #LaSoufriere, but these comparisons often forget the key parts of the equation. Not only are the hazards are chalk and cheese (runny lavas versus highly dangerous explosions and ashfall) but
..the vulnerability and exposure are light years apart. St Vincent is not a developed and wealthy community like Iceland. People and their livehoods are directly in harm's way. The physical, social and economic impacts of La Soufriere will be felt for many years to come.
