// racism in thread

hey tl, let's talk about racism towards asians /srs
rts for awareness are really appreciated
first off, let's talk about the normalization of the idea that asia is just china, japan, and korea. we all know that these are bigger parts of asia and possibly "more influential" to our world, but that doesn't mean we should exclude other countries from being asian.
it's like saying "the only states of the usa are california, texas, and new york because they're the most well known." (an example). you would think it's fine for awhile, until it gets to the point where you're told "you aren't american because you don't live in those states"
it's so normalized, that at my school, when i say i'm asian (half viet btw-), i'm asked "really? chinese, japanese, or korean?" like they were serious. i told them i was vietnamese and they didn't know where that was. THEY DID NOT KNOW VIETNAM EXISTED.
it's so fucking annoying to have asia seen as just these three countries. this is so so harmful to others. i also wanna touch on this and say that if you think indians are not asian, leave. that has also been so normalized, and i fucking hate it.
as i am not indian, i won't speak further on the situation , but i'll link a thread my moot made about racism towards indians at the bottom of this, so you can check it out !!
now it's time to talk about racial "slurs". we've toned down so much of the racial phrases and slurs thrown at us, that it's normalized. i grew up around phrases like "dog eater", "ching chong", "slit eyes", and "ch1nk". so often, i thought they were just jokes.
but they aren't. all these phrases play into something about our culture or appearance and it's honestly so gross. you treat the n-word so respectfully (as you definitely should), but then go around and say shit like "ching chong".
hearing this all the time, honestly gave me "internalized-racism" and i know that sounds absolutely bat-shit crazy, but let me explain. i thought to be popular, i would have to insult myself like this as well, and just take all this racism.
so throughout elementary school, i made jokes about myself with "ching chong" and "ch1nk" thinking it would mke me more popular (which it did, another terrible thing-), but it also left me hating my asian heritage.
now let's talk about cultural appropriation !! honestly, i have never seen a culture more appropriated than asians. our lettering is used as "aesthetic" for tattoos and hoodies, our new years gowns are "cute and trendy", etc... MY CULTURE IS NOT YOUR COSTUME.
these things are meaningful to us, but you take them for "aesthetic reasons". you can definitely look into our culture and find things you like about it, maybe asking your asian friends what they mean, but that does NOT make it yours.
now that i'm finished with the main things, let me list extremely racist things/stereotypes about asian people:

- (again) taking any of our culture as your "aesthetic"
- mocking asian accents
- insulting our food (smell, taste, texture, looks, etc)
- saying we're all smart
- saying some asian countries "aren't asian"
- acting like you know our languages (ling ling, ching chong, etc)
the list could on and on, as well as this thread. this isn't all the racism towards us, but enough to show that it's a problem. i might add more to the thread (possibly other thread), but for right now, pls just read this and share. it's such a normalized issue.
thread about racism towards indians, also heavily inspired by: https://twitter.com/karlshotpockets/status/1378917154716741633
