One last thing - but there are ABSOLUTELY certain ways that 2nd gens "connect" with their culture that are uncomfortable and "self-orientalizing" but using their Korean names their Korean parents gave them and taking an interest in casual hanbok are not those things.
In fact, these are pretty normal things to do? I think 1.5 gens have a tendency to be more critical of 2nd gens since we tend to have a closer immediate connection to Korean through language/growing up there but it's really harmful to say that the most normal attempts at-
-reconnecting with Korean culture (literally using their own names??? How is this "self-orientalizing theater"?? What a choice of words there) is cringy just because they happen to be 2nd generation Korean-Americans.
If any 2nd gen feels discouraged because of that awful thread - I'd just like to let you know that I'm a 1.5 gen diaspora Korean who has a closetful of hanbok (both casual and traditional) that I wear on the daily and most 1st gen Korean immigrant adults will ADORE you.
I get compliments from pretty much every Korean adult whenever I go out. I've gotten discounts & freebies at restaurants, I've had people come up and ask me for tips on where to get their own, my doctor's office jokes about getting matching ones for their nurses.
I don't wear hanbok to fulfil some arbitrary "Korean" criteria. I do it because I think hanbok is neat! I do it for me, not for dudes who think wearing casual hanbok is "theater". If anything - most other Kor-Ams will be delighted to see you just living your best life!
