If the WSJ is having trouble attracting more young subscribers, even if they are left leaning, it’s not going to draw them by running the same stuff that they can already get elsewhere on the internet.
For the sake of the WSJ — an indispensable publication I pay for because it contains things I can’t find elsewhere — I hope this is true. https://mobile.twitter.com/bradleyhope/status/1380892006130520066
And also, if you’re at the WSJ and you wish it was more like the NYT or the WP, maybe just go work there? Being a WSJ reporter is prestigious and you can probably get hired at other outlets.
Honestly this piece reminds me of the 2019 BuzzFeed gem contending Grindr made a business strategy error by failing to become a magazine publisher and agent for positive social change. No! Stick to what you’re good at! https://www.buzzfeednews.com/article/ryanmac/grindr-chinese-owner-company-chaos
It’s true that this straight Chinese guy did not seem like the ideal fit to run Grindr, but his being “hell bent on attaining 4 million daily active users” shows he understood the business far better than the corporate magazine writers who thought they were the “queer Atlantic.”
