This thread doesn't seem to acknowledge the fact that many Korean Americans are already aware that the "Koreanness" we practice is limited. We are aware, but unfortunately, this is the only way we know how to engage and participate. https://twitter.com/AskAKorean/status/1381398491222659081
This feeling is at the core of my own film work. When I made DOL and SPA NIGHT, I knew I'd never be able to fully represent a Koreanness that I wish I had a stronger relationship with.
The Korean American characters in DOL and SPA NIGHT understand the deep distance between them and the Korean culture and community they want be a part of. They long for a Koreanness that would help them be closer to their parents.
This thread has some insight, but it makes it with so little generosity. It doesn't understand that we as Korean Americans are already aware of this limitation. Not only are we aware, but it's also a source of sadness. All this thread does is pick at a scab we are trying to heal.
