Most lifestyle choices are not equally accessible to all people. Even well-meant advice that doesn’t take this into account can feel exclusionary & frankly shitty when you’re the one who’d like to be able to implement it but for reasons beyond your control aren’t able to
As a professional advice dispenser, I try really hard to be conscious of who is able to take the advice and who isn’t, and at least acknowledge the structural disparities. I’m sure I mess up sometimes too. I appreciate learning where ppl’s struggles are so I can be more sensitive
I’ll give an example that comes up in my book & other settings where the topic of connecting with acquisitions editors come up. So often, the common advice is just to network, strike up conversations, casually form relationships to talk up your work....
As someone who’s experienced semi-severe social/performance anxiety, I know that this advice can feel literally impossible to take. Not just for ppl w/ anxiety but for others as well. So I try to ack that & offer alternative paths to connecting w/ eds when I talk to authors
That’s a small example. I tried to think of everything possible when writing my book (which made finishing it difficult!) and I’m sure I didn’t hit everything. But it’s important to keep trying and learning
