Happening Now WA State Public Broadband Act vote HB 1336

https://www.tvw.org/
Hearing now from @Reuvencarlyle
He’s asking for a no vote on Republican Sen Ericksen (42nd) imo frivolous amendments
. @Reuvencarlyle asking for a no on Republican Short’s amendment
Now hearing from Sen Schoesler (R 9th District) saying some nonsense about Seattle Ports getting involved in Yakima broadband which like would never happen imo
Now hearing from @lisawellman44 with some good old fashioned obstruction.

This is such nonsense. @PortofSeattle is not going to go way across the state to provide broadband.

This amendment is some obstructionist theater & political for feeling like toes got stepped on.
Thank you @bhasegawa for being a #PublicBroadbandChampion

(Speaking up against a bad amendment)
Thank you Senator @EmilyRandallWA appreciate you pointing out your voters unique needs and why they need flexibility #HB1336
This particular amendment they are discussing will not do real harm and is fine and is just a way to help get this pass and coordinating the two bills that do a little different things.
If you want to get more in the weeds (like if you’re a journalist reading this thread) I recommend you reach out to Rep Hansen, Sen Wellman and WA Commerce’s Broadband office. I’m not any sort of an expert -LL
Thank you to @Reuvencarlyle for urging a no on amendment 614
Thank you to @Reuvencarlyle for again asking for a no on amendment 626 that duplicates processes that are already happening!
So many amendments. Ugh.
now hearing from @Reuvencarlyle speaking ahead of a vote for HB 1336 which already passed WA State House and now may pass the WA State Senate “we have the chance to be the best state in the nation (on broadband)” #HB1336 #WAPublicBroadband
“I don’t like the process of how this has gone” @Reuvencarlyle
Thank you Christine Rolfes (23rd LD) for being a Public Broadband Champion “more than half the states have this already ... we have been prohibitive in our state ... & in the minority” right now “public funds goes from federal government to private sector” “market is failing”
Now hearing some last minute claims that awful broadband is a privilege vs no service from @lisawellman44 who has a bill in SB 5383 that is not under threat but she continues to act like HB 1336 threatens her bill but it doesn’t.
She says she will be a no.
Now hearing from Republican Ericksen who has previously said that HB 1336 will nationalize an industry ... now mentions this is socialism ... being sarcastic about public banks and public healthcare #KeepItClassy #WAGOP
“We are going to treat this as a socialized” thing in WA State and implies that Seattle will gain the ability but we already have the ability says this is a “big move to socialism in WA State”
(Side comment) As far as I know no socialist organizations mobilized on this bill which they absolutely should have 😢 🥀 -LL
This is a baby step towards getting public broadband. But we need more people to show up to this fight.
Can’t event tweet the stuff Sen Ann Rivers from the 18th District is saying 🤬
Thank you @bhasegawa for supporting public banks and public broadband!
Omg please take the vote.
Now hearing from Senator Sheldon (D) 35th D ... talking about the range of energy providers across the state as his vision of the future of broadband — cooperatives, public, private, etc ... dismissing socialism claims ... “not there yet” “need unanimous”
Final Passage Vote Happening
We will have the list up tomorrow but notable is @Reuvencarlyle yes and @dsfrockt is also a yes
Thanks an organizing win!
You can see the final vote and the full history of this bill here .... can't wait till @GovInslee signs this into law.
NEXT --- need @RepJayapal @SenatorCantwell @PattyMurray to please ask the FCC to be public broadband champions, too. https://app.leg.wa.gov/billsummary?BillNumber=1336&Year=2021&Initiative=false
THANKS to @RepDrewHansen & congrats! https://twitter.com/RepDrewHansen/status/1381421288581816320?s=20
