For world autism month I want to share a personal story. My siblings teachers at school said there was something a bit different about him but they couldn’t pinpoint what, a child psychiatrist sat in on his lessons and said it was nothing (easiest paycheck she ever got) 1/
After leaving school he was re-assessed and misdiagnosed as having bipolar disorder, so was put on the wrong medication which completely messed him up, finally at aged 23 he was properly diagnosed as having severe aspergers 2/
All that time wasted and crippling his self esteem and being sent out of class for things he couldn’t help, just to reach adult age before being correctly diagnosed. It’s a strange disorder that needs a lot more research because it is taking away children’s lives 3/
Also it was the Latymer grammar school in Edmonton that employed this absolutely crap and harmful psychiatrist
The signs were that he was slow to start speaking, we put it down to him being bilingual, but when he did become literate he was pronouncing these long words he’d never heard, he had insane spelling ability, he was obsessive, and always wanted to be “bossy” over other kids
