Something from Brads interview people may not understand but Brad said perfectly. These cars have to have power steering these days because of the front end settings we use.
First thing, we are now using faster steered my boxes than ever. So a 16:1 in the 80’s, now a 8:1 or 6:1 at some of these small tracks. Add on to that, most guys are using smaller and smaller steering wheels. Not much leverage left for a driver to turn
Also the settings like caster in the front suspension. Years ago we would use around 5-6 degrees of caster. Now days some guys are 10-12 degrees. That’s extremely difficult to turn.
And the steering servo for power steering is hydraulic. So if the power steering goes out, you are trying to move fluid thru a pump that isn’t working. Old boxes that didn’t have power steering are easier to turn because of the fluid.
