The “if there’s a draft to trade picks for pennies in the dollar, this is the one!” arguments are bad and shallow, because they presume as a default that every so-called weak draft is weaker than it actually is.

It’s the easiest way for a fan/team to let themselves off the hook.
Weak draft ≠ completely devoid of talent.

The teams that recognize when the pendulum has swung too far the other way on perceived value, and then tap into that talent for cheap, are the ones winning the war. There will be dozens of NHL players drafted in 2021. Dozens.
This isn’t even a comment on the Leafs trade either. It’s a comment on analysis of the draft/trades, and the lazy crutches people use. It is possible to talk about this sport in the margins instead of falling back on tired punchlines.
