In Honor of minority health awareness month, i’m going to be educating yall on some things that should be common sense but our common disparities for minority patients in the medical world. Pls rt to help reach as many people. Lets go!
True or false, White and Black People Feel pain Differently
Next Question! Maternity Mortality (death) Rates do not change by race
This is also false! Black women have a 3x higher mortality rate than white women. This number increases to 5x when the woman is older than 30. (AMA 2020)
Next Question! Infant Mortality (death) rates, are not affected by race
Now at this point you may be saying “wouldnt the solution be to just have more black doctors” but its not that simple because:
one of the greatest barrier to effective care in the black community is lack of trust on both sides. This is due to hundreds of years of medical abuse and deceit in the US. The following tweets will be discussing some of the most famous ones
Have you heard of the Tuskegee Trials?
Have you heard of J Marion Sims' research?
Do you know about Ms. Henrietta Lacks?
What about the John Hopkins Lead Studies?
J marion surgeries
Tuskegee Trials
*2nd to last, my girl Henrietta
Last of the videos, baltimore lead trials.
Next question! True or False: Skin color affects the ways that certain diseases present themselves.
For example Kawasaki’s disease is distinguishable in white patients by a bright red rash, however brown and black patients will not have that.
Thankfully someone much smarter than me already figured this out and has created a book on clinical presentations for darker skin patients.
