I don't know what to say about the death of my good friend, Jim Pagels ( @jimpagels). But I know he would have wanted everyone - everyone - to remember that that a real person is behind every story of another driver killing another cyclist.

So here are some things about Jim.
Jim loved the Giant on H Street. He always flipped the desert hex over to the blue side when playing Settlers of Catan, so that it would stand out more. He was an ardent member of Team R and took great pleasure in the code he wrote to format graphs.
He bought boxes and boxes of brownie mix whenever it went on sale, and made them when he had friends over for board games. He discovered arugula in his mid twenties and regretted not trying it sooner. He really liked my kale caesar salad.
Jim also liked to lay things out. He described mathematical concepts as step-by-step “recipes.” He kept a spreadsheet of things he meant to tell his friends some day- links to share, stories they’d like. He made a plan to get from journalism to an econ PhD program, and it worked.
There’s a lot more I want to remember about Jim, but tweeting still feels weird. But he was so much more than another faceless victim of a bicycle crash.
