I love this book. Kitab al-Bulhan (Book of Wonders or The Book of Surprises). It’s a mainly 14th century manuscript bound in Baghdad, commissioned by a man from Erbil. It includes texts on astrology, astronomy, geomancy, and more. I love these illustrations. Eg this one of Iblis.
These two have a special place in my heart too. Left is Al-Madhab (The Golden One), one of seven kings, whose day is Sunday. On the right is Maymun (Prosperous/Lucky), whose day is Saturday.
Some other illustrations, from left to right: the demon Kabus, Sindibad and the old man of the sea, and the Waq Waq tree. Kabus means “nightmare” in Arabic. Think it’s a pretty accurate illustration of what sleep paralysis can feel like.
This is a good paper (13 pages) if you wanna learn more: https://www.slv.vic.gov.au/sites/default/files/La-Trobe-Journal-91-Stefano-Carboni.pdf
