A list of common fanons and misconceptions that claim to be from the MDZS novel... that are not actually in the novel:
1. Jin Guangyao has a "cheap" face
source: most likely that the wiki and TV Tropes page had this up during translation.
The novel, Ch. 47, 48, and 49 respectively:
2. Jin Guangshan is ugly
source: probably the ExR translator& #39;s note to Ch. 72, which expresses surprise that the JGS from the donghua is handsome
The novel, Ch. 69:
3. The source of enmity between the Qinghe Nie and Qishan Wen Clans is a border dispute
Source: ???
The novel, Ch. 49:
4. Jin Guangyao hid the fleeing Lan Xichen in Yunping
Source: Problem Ch.48, where LXC describes it as "the shame of a lifetime"
Novel: Never mentions Yunping. Ch. 48 establishes that Meng Yao had left the brothel by that point. Ch. 105 implies LXC didn& #39;t know JGY grew up there.
5. Madame Qin only approached Jin Guangyao the night before he wed Qin Su
Source: wikia in 2019
Novel: Ch. 86 shows that while she waited quite a bit, invitations had yet to be sent when she approached him
6. Su She is not a talented cultivator
the source: Probably Ch. 80, which establishes that he frequently makes mistakes with music
the novel, Ch. 30 and 46:
7. It& #39;s ambiguous whether Nie Huaisang or Xue Yang k*lled cats to lure the juniors to Yi City
the source: ???
the novel, Ch. 37 establishes XY didn& #39;t know who Wei Wuxian was until he entered the city. Ch 109 establishes who did it, and was later confirmed by MXTX
8. Jin Guangyao pulled Lan Xichen to the coffin
the source: probably Ch. 109, where LXC is confused AF about JGY& #39;s intentions
the novel, Ch. 108: LXC went to JGY at the coffin, mistaking his intentions for running away
will add fanons as they occur to me but for now, let& #39;s add: pretty much any relationship within a cultivation clan when someone unfamiliar with Chinese culture tries to define it.
10. Lan Wangji played Inquiry for the 13 years after Wei Wuxian died, searching for his soul
source: ???
the novel: never mentions it, in main or side story. It does mention that other clans tried to summon Wei Wuxian& #39;s soul and failed, but Lan Wangji is never mentioned
11. MXTX said Lan Xichen is "dumb"
source: an author& #39;s note mentioning "wit" taken out of context
the note: is clearly talking about a fan theory that Lan Xichen knew everything all along and was playing the long game
the novel, Ch. 109: implies he is quite intelligent
12. Jin Guangyao unambiguously, deliberately m*rdered Jin Rusong (1/2)
source: probably a combo of the novel& #39;s first version and people not reading well
the novel: Ch. 47, JGY denies it to Qin Su. Ch. 86, the rumor is started by none other than & #39;voice of the mob& #39; Clan Leader Yao
12. Jin Guangyao unambiguously, deliberately m*rdered Jin Rusong (2/3)
the novel: Ch. 106, Lan Xichen presumes he did it, JGY dodges the question.
Ch. 108, Jin Guangyao lists A-Song amongst those he k*lled... but also includes Qin Su, who died by her own su*cide. Then there& #39;s...
12. Jin Guangyao unambiguously, deliberately m*rdered Jin Rusong (3/3)
the novel: ...Jin Zixuan, whose death Jin Guangyao insists was an accident in Ch. 106, only to concede the following:
tl;dr: JGY considers those who die by accidents set off by his actions those he k*lled too
13. "Wei Wuxian k*lled 3000 people at Nightless City"
the source: in-novel rumors
the novel: Ch. 79& #39;s squabble casts doubt on numbers, and in Ch. 99, the reliable Lan Xichen confirms that Wei Wuxian was only *facing* 3000 people that night. So the numbers must be less
