The consultation process on the new curriculum has been the most open, transparent, and extensive of any previous. This included hundreds of teachers (including over 100 in the curriculum working groups), subject matter experts, advisors, and First Nations groups. 1/ https://twitter.com/btonita/status/1381298735691358219
As has been said and repeated, the process is not done yet. This is draft curriculum and so feedback from the public is welcomed and encouraged at http://alberta.ca/curriculum . Teachers that pilot the curriculum will be able to provide the best feedback after working with it. 2/
The curriculum has been endorsed by individuals such as Former Grand Chief Wilton Littlechild, a former member of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada. 3/
Dr. George Georgiou and Dr. Cathy Adams, both from the University of Alberta Faculty of Education, have also endorsed the curriculum. 4/
For the first time, the new curriculum will teach students about the history and legacy of residential schools and the signing of treaties. 5/
In addition, students will study Alberta & Canada’s ethnic and religious diversity. Learning about such diversity will help our children better understand, respect, appreciate, and celebrate that diversity and help break down prejudice. 6/
The curriculum includes more on contributions & history of Black Albertans. Students will learn about the history of racism and discrimination in N. America, and specifically, in AB. The injustices of our past must be taught & confronted in a real way in order to move forward. 7/
As part of our election promise on education, which we were elected on, we promised to focus on developing foundational competencies, making financial literacy a mandatory element, and teaching consent. This draft curriculum delivers on that. 8/
I encourage all Albertans to take some time to look through the curriculum and share their feedback. On that page, you can also find the timeline and involvement from 2019 through to today. There is a lot of time to review and provide feedback at https://www.alberta.ca/curriculum.aspx?utm_source=redirect&utm_medium=all&utm_campaign=GoA&utm_term=Curriculum. 9/9
