Hard to believe 19 years ago today I was inside the presidential palace in Venezuela filming as a coup unfolded.
This was before FB or Twitter, we had no communication with the outside world.
There were rumours of an air strike. We could see on TV we were surrounded by tanks.
We kept filming. Later we fled the presidential palace, hid the tapes and lay low trying to figure out our next move.

We never expected what followed- 48 hours later the people took to the streets and the coup was overturned. We filmed that too.
Our documentary THE REVOLUTION WILL NOT BE TELEVISED screened at @TIFF_NET @sxsw & went on to win multiple awards. @ebertvoices @RottenTomatoes

It was our first feature doc & it was a baptism of fire.

People often said we were lucky to be in the right place at the right time.
We were lucky to be there that day but we'd been filming for months, slowly building access & contacts.

Looking back all these years later, I feel incredibly proud & also lucky.

You always need a little luck in these things. Luck, patience & a solid support network.
There’s been a documentary boom since then, yet verité docs are still the hardest to fund & get made.

I love seeing docs like @acasathefilm & @Collectivemovie doing well. These films take time, money and someone to believe in you and the story you want to tell.
So to all my filmmaker friends, in the darkest of moments take ❤️ you’ll always get there in the end.

My next film PURE GRIT will premiere later this year. Can't wait to send it out into the world!
