Finally took the time to watch the #SnyderCut and I haven't done an unsolicited movie review in awhile, so I figured this would be a good time to jump back into it. TLDR; I thought it was pretty solid. THREAD INCOMING:
This is a COMPLETELY different movie from the 2017 theatrical release, so much so that I wonder what WB/Whedon's intentions were. Regardless of what you think of either version, the fact that they are so different is a real head-scratcher.
I thought the 4-hour runtime was pretty ludicrous at first, but Snyder actually tries to make it seem necessary. I think he saw the short comings of world/character development from earlier DCEU movies, and did his best to flush things out in the first half of the movie.
Snyder's direction for Wonder Woman and the Amazons is FANTASTIC. They looked SO cool and I think really capture Patty Jenkins vision for them while making it his own. It was a very pleasant surprise, as I totally forgot that WW was one of the best parts of BvS. That being said..
Batman lacked presence throughout the movie. He seemed more like a Nick Fury than a Tony Stark, being there solely to set up the team and not to provide his own personal philosophy. We've seen a lot of interpretations of Batman already, so him taking a backseat is fine I guess.
I did not enjoy The Flash/Barry Allen at all. Idk if its that I was never a fan of the character, or that I'm not a fan of time travel in media, or maybe I just found his character annoying, but I just know I didn't like him. On the other hand...
I thought Ray Fisher did an excellent job as Cyborg. He got way more love and attention in this version, to the benefit of the movie. While this version of Cyborg isn't my favorite (I'm not a fan of the anger/brooding) I think it worked well within the story.
The voice actor for Steppenwolf is uh, not great lol. I can think of a dozen other VOs who could do a better job. I thought his new visual interpretation, as well as Darskseid's and Desaad's, was pretty good.
Bruce's dream at the end seemed super tacked on. That was something that would have absolutely been left on the cutting room floor in normal circumstances. It added nothing to the story imo, and added an unnecessary additional ending.
I now understand the #RestoreTheSnyderVerse stuff. There are several minor pieces of canon that are different to the existing DCEU, and it is clear that this movie was supposed to set up several others. I'm not invested enough in the DCEU to care either way tbqh.
I really hated the "ReleasetheSnyderCut" stuff because I thought it made comic book fans seem super whiny and annoying. I now see that there was merit in Snyder releasing is OG vision for the film, especially knowing it wasn't his choice to leave the project.
All in all, I found the #SnyderCut quite enjoyable, to the point where I wouldn't mind watching it again with a friend. I thought it still had its problems, mostly regarding Snyder's usual artistic choices, but I think it more than justifies its existence. END OF THREAD
