why mafia isn't a fucking aesthetic: a thread
DISCLAIMER: im making this thread because im so sick and tired as an italian to see you stupid ignorants seeing the whole mafia thing as an aesthetic, and as a thing you can make fun of. im not blaming itzy or anything before you come at me
SOME HISTORY. the sicilian mafia, also simply known as the mafia and frequently referred to as cosa nostra, is an italian mafia-terrorist type, organized crime syndicate and criminal society originating in the region of sicily.
its a loose association of criminal groups that share a common organisational structure of code of conduct, and present themselves to the public under a common brand. the basic group is known as "family" or "clan" and each claims sovereignity over a territory, usally a town or-
- or village or neighborhood of larger city, in which it operates its rackets. the mafia's core activities are protection racketeering, the arbitration of disputes between criminals, and the organizing and oversight of illegal agreements and transactions.
by the 20th century mafiosi established gangs in north and south america which replicate the traditions and methods of their sicilian cousins.
in 1876, Leopoldo Franchetti described the mafia as an "industry of violence". in 1993 italian sociologist Diego Gambetta called it a "cartel of private protection firms". the core business of thr mafia is protection racketeering (providing extralegal protection against-
-criminal activity and dishonest conduct through violence and vandalism) the mafia does not serve the general public as the police do, but only specific clients who pay them for protection.
the mafia's principal activities are:
- settling disputes among other criminals
- protecting them against each other's cheating
- organizing and overseeing illicit agreements, often involving many agents, such as illicit cartel agreements in otherwise legal industries
one of the first accounts of an initation ceremony into the mafia was given by Bernardino Verro, a leader of the Fasci Italiani, democratic/socialist movement. in order to give the movement teeth and to protect himself from harm, Verro became a member of the mafia. He says:

MAFIA VICTIMS:
and there are too other victims, some just disappeared and we dont know how they died
FALCONE AND BORSELLINO
on may 23rd 1992, sicilian judge and anti-mafia campaigner Giovanni Falcone was assassinated in broad daylight, a crime that marked a turning point in sicily's history.
Falcone and his wife, magistrate Francesca Morvillo, were killed along with their three security escorts when a bomb exploded under their car on a road near the town of Capaci. Falcone, who was 53 when he died, spent most of his life trying to fight the mafia, bringing about the
- so-called ‘maxi trial’ in 1986-1987, which led to the conviction of 342 mafiosi. Hitmen used more than 500 kilogrammes (half a ton) of explosives in the attack, which was ordered by mafia godfather, Toto Riina, as revenge for Falcone's attempts to break up their syndicate.
But the brutal attack only helped to turn many in Sicily against the mafia and spark change in the region, which had long been in the grip of organised crime families. In 2014,4 members of the Sicilian mafia were sentenced to between 12 years and life in prison for their role.
Two months after Falcone was murdered, fellow judge Paolo Borsellino was killed by another car bomb.
Paolo Borsellino, another judge and prosecutinf magistrate, who just as Falcone (and with him) fought against the mafia. he was also killed in the same way as Falcone, near his mother's house in Palermo.
this is for you to see that mafia had no pity for anyone (the article says "11 years old, killed and thrown in the acid")
these are all the victims reported through the years. thats 1000+ common people and some victims just disappeared.
its so disrespectful for people. if youre going to ignore this and says that the mafia is "nothing serious" (i saw lots of people saying this on here) you are disgusting. please stop romanticizing this, stop making fun of this, stop using it as an aesthetic.
so many innocent people died for this. there are a lot of films and books about this, for you to take this seriously and for it to not happens again.
heres the trailer of a film about a child named Michele who finds another child, Filippo, seemingly dead in a deep hole in the ground.
