i cant speak on behalf of all south asians bc obviously people witness + go through different things. this thread will just be about what i’ve seen. if i say smth that you want to add onto (as a south asian), reply pls

1. generalization

generalization is hurtful to literally every minority ever. and there’s a lot of it happening with us.

stop generalizing us as indians. there are so many countries within south asia, and saying “indians” just doesn’t mean shit.

2. stereotypes

there’s a shit ton of these lmao.

first. not all south asians have that indian accent. some of us do, but not all of us. indian accents aren’t a bad thing, stop treating them like it’s a creepy way of speaking when people can’t actually change it. +

second. that brown tech-savvy nerdy middle school kid with the high nasally voice doesn’t exist. not all of us are good w tech. not all of us are nerdy and have glasses. not all of us have high ass voices. i cant stress this enough. +

third. that weird creepy brown (specifically indian with an accent) tech-savvy hacker dude joke isn’t funny. south asians aren’t creepy. that stereotype is hurtful and no one listens. stop that shit

3. compliments

now if i made this thread a week ago, i wouldn’t have added this part but i feel the need to now.

if you see someone with an indian accent, don’t compliment it. why? because society has given indian accents such a bad rep that when people do receive these +

constantly compared to the same characters every time. not only this but also these characters are 99% of the time stereotyped with the accent, skills, voice, etc, so that too adds to how they hurt us.

5. skin tone

gonna keep this one short and sweet. just because someone is super light skinned or super dark skinned, doesn’t mean they are or aren’t south asian. i myself am very light compared to my many south asian friends and i’d rather not have someone try to tell me +
