As an EU citizen I am disappointed and angered by the lack of substance here, and as a former EUDEL Myanmar employee, I am in disbelief of the lack of understanding displayed.
Let my try to explain:

@SabatucciEU https://twitter.com/JosepBorrellF/status/1381167323323699201
1. "democratic transition was accompanied in the same year by ethnic peace. [...] a Nationwide Ceasefire Agreement was signed [...], [aboishment of transition] now risks re-creating ethnic violence."

This is absolute nonsense. Neither was the NCA "nationwide", nor has there...
...been "ethnic peace" since 2015 (maybe ask Kachin IDPs about that?) and I am somehow quite sure that even internal EU reporting would tell Borrell and whoever wrote this blog post for him exactly that.

2. "We could reinforce this diplomatic track by offering to increase our...
...economic ties if Myanmar returns to the path of democracy."

What does it take for us to understand that there is no return to the status quo ante? Do we really believe that if we just offer MAL more investment, they'll stop murdering and hand back power to ASSK? Also...
...this completely ignores that the people of MM most likely wouldn't accept a return to the 2008 Const and the TMD's path to "discipline-flourishing democracy".

3. "‘do no harm’ with sanctions": While I understand where this thinking is coming from, I would argue that...
...it is not applicable to the current situation. We are not back in the mid 90s with well-established SLORC rule. The battle for control over the state is wide open. The population is willingly and consciously inflicting harm on the economy and we speak of "no harm"? ...
...Sanctions should thus be crafted in short- and mid-term thinking to hurt the TMD as much as possible rn.

4."make sure that the will of Myanmar’s people, as expressed at the November 2020 elections, is respected" - Great! So why on earth are we even worse then the Nordics...
...and don't even *mention* the CRPH which has clear legislative legitimacy from precisely those elections? And the historic efforts of forming a unity government?

If the EU is serious in supporting MM "in accordance with the clear will of its brave people"...
...we must do more than apply punitive measures that'll likely have little effect on the TMD and must actively support the democratic resistance. The best way to do that is to set steps to recognise the upcoming Unity Government as the legitimate government of MM. ...
Positive: glad to see ECHO planning humanitarian aid. Hope to see this happening in a cross-border fashion.

But all in all, I am more than dissappointed by our lack of proper response and ignorance of the past years displayed in this statement.
