a quick thread on opening pages and why reading in your genre is important:
you want your opening pages to really be immersive and hook the reader. you want style, set up, voice, grounding. all those things. opening pages are really hard to do! 1/?

and i'm seeing some opening pages in my subs that could be anybody's opening pages. they are very familiar in that i've read that type of first pages many times in both published books and books i work on.

i highly recommend reading widely and also in your genre. but when you read in your genre (to learn tropes, pacing etc.) critically think about why the opening works but also how you can make it your own and different.

and that's what i really want to emphasize. make the pages your own. have your MC start in a place ONLY your MC can start in. that will also help with worldbuilding bc you can show some emotional resonance with the MC and the world.

and finally, it can take you out of cliche.
so read your genre, notice the writing, see the patterns, then break them down to make them uniquely and wonderfully yours. :) you can do it!!

PS. UP is a great example of what i'm talking about.
