Why fansites and s4saengs are completly differents and shouldn& #39;t be called the same: a thread
It became a very common misconception since we& #39;ve been deep into the pandemic, as fansites pictures are becoming more and more rare compared to before, so people are less exposed to them and eductated about them
Note: this thread is for educational purpose, you are free to have your own opinion!
Firstly, let& #39;s define those concepts

Fansites: Fans who legally follows idols during official schedules to take pictures of them. They get schedules information from fancafes, and sometimes directly from companies. Schedules are often publics to be accessible for the press.
Fansites helps to sustain the fandom both domestically and internationally.
S4saengs:
An obsessive fan who stalks, or engages in other behaviour constituting an invasion of the privacy of a Korean idol or other public figure. A s4seangs goal is individual recognition from the idol. (definition taken from wikipedia)
From the definitions only, we can see a clear difference, as well as some similarities that can confuse certain fans. But they are drastically different.
S4saengs are an INVASION of privacy. Fansites are attending PUBLIC schedules, while being authorized, and know the time and place of it from what the companies has made public. Their goal is not individual recognition but to give content for the whole fandom to enjoy.
The type of schedules fansites attends at are: at airports, concerts, fansigns, exit of tv shows, etc... (the majority of them being suspended due to the pandemic)
Can fansites be problematic?

Yes, they can. And that& #39;s the difference.
Being problematic and being a s4saeng is NOT the same thing, throwing the word s4saeng around is very harmful. It minimize its actual definition, and it& #39;s because of how commonly the word is used that ssgs are not taken as seriously as they should. It doesn& #39;t helps idols at all.
Problematics behavior from fansites are:
- Over steppings the limits imposed by the company
- Mobbing
- Taking picture during private schedules
Those behaviors are problematic and should be called out, but they are not "s4saeng behavior" and they shouldn& #39;t be called s4saengs, it& #39;s a different problem
Exemples of problematic st4ys fansites... a simple research can shows wether or not a fansite is problematic, it& #39;s not a secret https://twitter.com/KSMBRAND/status/1368516731556270085?s=20">https://twitter.com/KSMBRAND/...
This interview with a fansite ( http://www.thekrazemagazine.com/latest-updates/2019/8/11/fansites-a-sit-down-with-one-of-the-most-misunderstood-members-of-the-k-pop-fandom)">https://www.thekrazemagazine.com/latest-up... also answers well the concern most international fans have about fansites, and I recommend checking it out
Also noting that k-fans and fansites too are against s4saengs, which would make it very hard for them to get recognized in their work, as fansites depends on the fandom& #39;s support. International fans are not the only one with common human decency.
Being a fansite is time and money consuming, you need support and from people to buy your content if you want to keep doing it. Without anyone supporting a fansite, it will simply shut down. Based on that, we can assume that every big fansites are not s4saengs.
And finally, last point: fansites are helpful for idols and their fandom.
We already went over the point of fansites sustaining the fandom with authorized high quality pictures, thus relaying information and content to everyone. (+ it also greatly help for the promotion of the group to get more contents shared and early pictures of events)
But there is a lot of contributions from fansites that are often forgotten. This includes birthday events, subway ads, bus ads, or any kind of public advertizing
Birthday ads are fansites pictures. We would simply not be able to throw big advertisments events like those if there wasn& #39;t any fansites.
As for birthday cafe events, the cupsleeves, posters and photocards are provided by fansites as well, as its prohibited to re-sell official content. There wouldn& #39;t be any events like those if fansites didn& #39;t provid the content for fans to throw them.
To conclude, fansites and s4saengs shouldn& #39;t be put in the same category. It& #39;s a harmful misconception, and I hope everyone can educate themselves about it.
If you want to add any information or correct some of the point I made, feel free to let me know!
Okay I& #39;m gonna finally mute this thread soon now!

Just adding, I still have some people telling me that fansites are still ssngs and... I don& #39;t really know what to tell you? haha
You are not forced to give something the ssng label to be against it. But well, we are touching a very blurry subjet, as there is some really f*cked up fansites, but I was talking about the majority. It& #39;s good to have awarness without putting them all in the same basket.
Again, you are free to have your own opinion, but just know that if you want to cancel fansites, that would mean not supporting their content. And it include the advertizing projets, cafe events, all the promotion they create for the group, etc. Otherwise, that would hypocritical.
