This is an amazing thread from someone who has felt completely justified in presenting the cutting edge research of a female colleague as his own. Perhaps @AmarAmarasingam might begin with his own shortcomings. https://twitter.com/amaramarasingam/status/1380543224352235524
From 2014 to 2015 I conducted long-term conversations with actiive jihadists, collaborating with Amar on the “Talking to Foreign Fighters” project. Amar handed all 40 files of my original screenshots to Lorne Dawson claiming them as his own.
They took the work of a 60 year old female Muslim academic who had spoken with these 40+ young men in online conversations from between 1 to 18 months, as well as a database of Twitter accounts built by myself and my students. They were given $2.5 million in research grants.
Years ago this was reported to SSHRC, but as yet they have done nothing. Subsequent reports by Dawson & Amarasingam based upon my research focus on the role of religious ideology as a salient factor in radicalization, a result of their not addressing the source of the research.
As a Muslim I have been particularly distressed by their use of my work, which in fact points to internal stressors such as family strife and the external pull of recruiters and the group as the main factors in radicalization. The ideology is simply used to justify their actions.
I find it telling that this thread has been up for at least six hours with so little response. Where is the indignation now? Where is the cancellation? I have every last screenshot, every version of the Talking to Foreign Fighters report/article. No shame?
