Just spoke to several dozen American Jewish teens spending a gap year in Israel. I asked how many had personally experienced antisemitism. Virtually all of them raised their hands. I asked how many had felt they had to conceal their Jewishness in public. Again, a large majority.
One teen said she was pelted with pennies by classmates who then took out a ruler to try and measure her nose. Another said other students had put up posts of themselves playing a swastika-shaped drinking game and shouting "Heil Hitler."
A third teen said his family had avoided going to synagogue out of fear. A fourth said he didn't wear his kippah at school because "it just wasn't worth the hassle." A fifth said her family changed plans during a vacation because they were warned they wouldn't be safe as Jews.
