8 things I've learnt as a digital marketing freelancer.

A thread.
1. Give more than you take.

You are paid in direct proportion to the value your bring. No one cares if something took you 12 hours or 30 mins. Your tasks need to drive revenue or solve problems otherwise businesses do not care.

Deliver Value.
2. Leverage attention streams. Instead of searching for instant dopamine hits, leverage social media to deliver YOU value. Follow people who tweet value, and watch videos in your field. Your brain will instantly be thinking of ways to apply these into your own work.
3. Invest in yourself.

If you earn 0-10k p/m, the best investment you can make is yourself. Cliche but media buying, copywriting and email marketing aren’t careers your taught at school. Invest in skill teaching books and courses.
3.2 Not fake guru business courses. Skill based courses.
You + investment = Skill set
Skill set = ability to generate money.
Ability to generate money = Value to businesses.
Value to businesses = The best way to succeed at scale. @iamshackelford @ecomchasedimond @RayEdwards
4. Health comes first.
A "Sleep when you're dead" attitude is counter intuitive.
- Drink 3-4L of water
- Sleep 8 hours
- Walk 10K steps
- Workout.
These are the basic fundamentals.

5. Specialise.
Being a jack of all trades is ok starting out and getting your food money. This taught me a lot about what I LOVE working on (ecom) and what you don’t like working on. Do the shit tasks on Upwork just for the reviews to start with...
5.1 Then when you deliver killer results (which you will if you work hard enough), leverage them to specialise and get clients you REALLY want to work with. This is key to those $8-10k months.
6. Work Ethic.
Freelancing comes with a lot of anxiety at times. This Is almost inevitable when starting out. Solution: Work hard everyday. Don’t worry where you’ll be in 1-5 years. Get up and get your head down day to day, and 1 year later look up and see how far you’ve come.
7. People skills.
Treat everyone you work with with respect and do not to burn bridges. Also - take extreme responsibility.
They fuck you over? Take some responsibility for your judgement and learn, but never lower your standards.
8. Never start thinking you know it all.
If you want to become the best, you need to be learning, always.
The more I learn, the more I realise how little I know.
