Submitted a book chapter proposal in response to a Call for Chapters: A Thread 1/7
So the book itself is supposed to be about equity and fairness in AI. I submitted an abstract to talk about the racial bias in AI and other types of technologies and their impacts. 2/7
Got a reply that my chapter doesn’t fit the theme of the book because “there’s no scientific proof” of that happening. I’m like.. 3/7
So... Ignoring the fact that the ultimate point in my abstract is that the entire AI field needs to change and make room for Black people in all of its processes. This dude is quite literally ignoring an entire, growing body of research on the topic to call it “unproven” 4/7
Like, PBS is literally doing a documentary about it. That’s how much visibility there is about the subject. (Shout out to Joy Buolamwini) 5/7
To top all of that off, the situation is quite literally a perfect example of the problem I was planning to write about. So I told them so. 6/7
I pointed out pretty much everything from this thread, saying that it’s ironic that this interaction is a microcosm of what I planned to write about.
