Back from a Twitter hiatus to this desperate story. Feel ashamed to be part of a system that treats a colleague like this. We all need to feel the pain of Riel’s experience. (1/n) https://twitter.com/nursesnarrate/status/1380841682174894080
Racial bullying occurs at many levels. 1. Structural, by keeping the fear of the loss of visa hanging over the heads of internationally- recruited staff. (2/n)
2. Institutional, by targeting recruitment of experienced staff but paying them entry-level rates, and keeping them at such pay bands for way longer than their white colleagues. (3/n)
3. Local, by fostering the culture where, to quote Riel, ‘Being constantly let down by the people in the institution that I work for, knowing that they wouldn’t be there for me when I needed them.’ (4/n)
4. Individual, with the casual ignoring of break times, victim-blaming on the grounds of culture or personality.
I pledge to highlight these individual tales of heroic defiance as long as I am with @WRES_team (5/n)
There will be, depressingly, many more such stories from colleagues. Any which are shared with me will, with the permission of the staff member, be revealed. (6/n)
The WRES data is one thing - but that data is founded on the individual stories of experiences like Riel’s. I am truly sorry, and pledge to do better for my role as part of the #NHS. (end)
