Today I have been wrestling with Python data structures, occasionally looking at my mentions on my personal account, and thinking about human evolution.
We've spent the last 400 generations becoming increasingly settled, from village to town to city to megalopolis.

But our natural unit of organization is the hunter gatherer band, which is itself a member of a tribe.
When resources are plentiful we may settle into a given area, and organizationally settle into stratified tribes, with chieftains in positions of authority.
Twitter is a product of our most advanced social construct, the post-industrial society. But it serves as a virtual space in which we self-organize into those old familiar pre-agriculture constructs.

View activity here through those lenses and some things get easier.
Hunter gatherer bands had adult male contingents that would go out seeking larger game. The adult female contingent stuck closer to home, gathering, and managing children.

Online groups that I would deem "healthy" have a similar mix, and women end up in leadership roles.
If a group has male leadership and there isn't a woman in a strong deputy role, that's a big warning sign. Such groups either evolve to a more balanced condition, or they tend to get themselves into trouble.
There are male dominated groups online that have women who are "camp followers", they are a needed accessory for some activities, but they are not found in positions of authority.

Consider the gender split on the Capitol Siege participants: https://www.usatoday.com/storytelling/capitol-riot-mob-arrests/
For the purposes of such an inspection, I would consider discounting those who are clearly not well, as described in this thread. https://twitter.com/AmericanHacker/status/1380380496652161025
Not that those who are unwell should be shunned, but there are male dominated groups on this site with female associates who are uniformly ... unwell accessories to their activities.

I see some of that in the various factions that have been flooding my mentions.
I've been treating the times where I notice that mention count as a "mindfulness bell".

I pause to consider how I feel, not knowing what I will find if I click through.

Then I pause to examine how I feel if I do click through.
