There is a disturbingly large number of pastors who not only believe LGBTQ+ folks can’t be Christians, they also believe anyone who affirms the faith of LGBTQ+ folks can’t be a Christian either.

To say this belief is without precedent in Scripture is a gross understatement.

This “theology” actually runs in direct opposition to every depiction of biblical salvation.

When I’ve drilled down on this belief system, after having my own salvation questioned by fellow pastors, I often find that it’s not about a commitment to biblical theology at all.

It’s about using the Bible to justify homophobia.

Tragically, some pastors who hold these erroneous and bigoted beliefs lead churches that claim “everyone is welcome!” When people find out that claim is a lie, it causes tremendous pain and many folks leave church forever.

Beautiful people who have been deeply wounded at the hands of these pastors, even some who vowed to leave church forever because it was so bad, have found their way to our church and trusted me with their stories.

Walking with them is one of the great honors of my life.

I firmly believe we need to care for the ones who have been wounded, but we also need to confront those who are doing the wounding.

There is nothing remotely biblical or Christlike about this theology and the pastors who propagate it must be called to account.
