Can we seriously talk about Prince Philip's death and the moralising that has been created around it? The reason many people, including myself, don't care about his death isn't because we're inhumane unempathetic people. It's because this man had zero role in many of our lives.
It doesn't mean that anyone wishes him death, but if a random man you don't know has lived to age 99, in very comfortable conditions throughout his life, you won't be tweeting pictures of him and writing love stories about his devotion and relationship to his wife.
At the end of the day nearly 70% of this country are royalists and so the outpouring of grief isn't exactly surprising! But those of us not grieving his death aren't cunts, we just don't think this man's death at 99 years of age is any more important than all the other deaths!
That's not to say people can't mourn his death, please do whatever you want! Parasocial relationships are interesting and we all have different experiences with them. But I don't think it's that radical to also question whether you should care about his death in the first place!
I'd never tweet about a friend's grandparent I'd met, who died of old age and whose death I felt really sad about, or the relationship to their partner. Find it fascinating how many people my age publicly mourn Prince Philip – especially when he's been q low key in our lives.
Just worth questioning these things imo. Is it public pressure? Is it ritual? Is it the "expected thing to do" in mainstream British culture? Why are we all so wedded to royal traditions expressing so much grief for a man we never knew? Why is the Guardian so blindly royalist?
Want to clarify once more that I'm not happy the man is dead, I'd wish no such thing. I don't particularly care because he lived such a long and healthy life. People die and I'm sure it's sad for people who know him – I just don't know him! I have no real connection to monarchs.
