What if Kiyoomi gets another pair of ugly yellow sneakers as a gag gift from Komori (as an ode to the good ol’ days) but he wears them to practice anyway because they are perfectly fine to use and Atsumu completely short circuits and just goes: Wait. Wait a second.
He genuinely needs a second to think because... woah. The bright yellow brings him back to training camps and matches at nationals and suddenly his insides feel so warm with nostalgia? Like yes the yellow is objectively hideous but this is Kiyoomi we are talking about.
Kiyoomi who wore the yellow to the point where it kinda became his thing. He was the one in tacky colored shirts and jerseys with ugly yellow sneakers to match but he made it /work/. And it was so frustratingly endearing back then. And now he is wearing them again?
And after so long of seeing the spiker wearing only neutral colors and dark earthy tones the yellow sends Atsumu hurtling into a fourth dimension because he looks like the awkward sixteen year old version of Kiyoomi again, who might’ve captured Atsumu’s attention way too often.
But he isn’t awkward and he isn’t sixteen. He is really hot and he figured out how to style his hair to add insult to injury. Atsumu has been really good at pretending his teammate isn’t incredibly attractive but the sneakers of all things quickly shatter his blissful ignorance.
His feelings are suddenly back full force after being repressed for so long and Atsumu just doesn’t know what to do with himself. He fumbles through practice that day and is so ready to go back to his apartment and contemplate his entire existence but Kiyoomi
corners him first, demanding to know what’s wrong. Atsumu doesn’t meet him in the eyes and instead opts to look down to the locker room floor, giving some lame excuse about being tired. Kiyoomi follows his gaze to the shoes he has yet to change out of, and oh, he gets it.
“Are my shoes offending you?” he chuckles.

Atsumu frantically waves his hands back and forth, because no, of course not Omi they’re just a pair of ugly shoes, how could they be offensive?

Kiyoomi rolls his eyes, a smirk forming at the corners of his mouth.
“You had the worst shade of piss yellow hair in high school and you defended it with your life. And I did the same with these, as much of an eyesore as they are.”

Atsumu blushes and mumbles in agreement. “Yeah... reminds me of high school.”

Kiyoomi hums, returning to his bag.
It isn’t often the brazen setter is left without much to say so Kiyoomi figures his suspicions are correct, considering how Atsumu is failing to hide his flushed face.

He bites his lip to hide a smile, turning to Atsumu with a knowing look, never one to beat around the bush.
“Let’s go get dinner after this. There’s a new place a short walk away I want to try.”

Atsumu just stares at the spiker for a while before dumbly nodding in agreement, cheeks turning an even darker shade of red before going to wait by the front of the gym in disbelief.
Kiyoomi showers and gets dressed, smiling to himself as he puts away the sneakers that he is suddenly very thankful for.

And if he was secretly attracted to a questionable shade of yellow that came from a poor dye job back in high school, well... at least he wasn’t the only one.
Komori definitely deserved a thank you text.
